Who We Are
Know Thy Food, aka our store brand: Brooklyn Cooperative Grocery
KnowThyFood aka Brooklyn Cooperative Grocery was originally formed as a buying club in Portland’s Brooklyn Neighborhood, to be an access point for high quality and ethically produced bulk goods, produce, and meat, as well as unique grocery and beverage produced in Oregon and Washington. We are renewing our focus on being both a hub for Pacific Northwest farmers, producers, and distributors; as well as an accessible marketplace for Portland area residents to purchase fresh, unique, and consciously grown food.
Since then it has grown into multicellular organism, taking on many roles as an organic, locally-focused grocery store, an online ordering catalog, a neighborhood cafe, a pick-up location for Field Farms, Azure members and Charcuterie & Me, a community hub in the neighborhood, and much more.
A New Chapter in Our Story:
All good stories have a proper ending and with nearly a decade spanning many chapters, it is time for KnowThyFood Cooperative to ride off into the sunset as we prepare to tell a new story- one we hope to see you all in.
Introducing Brooklyn Grocery Cooperative:
With our lease finishing up at the end of September, it became clear that we needed to back to the writing room and make some changes. A new vision was required if we were to continue as a grocery cooperative, alongside an new vision which accurately reflected what our members and wider community wanted. Do we continue as a grocery store? Do we even stay in the Brooklyn neighborhood?
What we realized was that by shuttering operations or relocating out of the neighborhood, Brooklyn would be losing it’s only local grocery market, leaving residents in what experts refer to as a “Food Desert”. It was upon learning this information, that we decided to refocus on a mission which emphasizes on community building. Our values can be reflected in our new name:
Brooklyn: We proudly serve the vibrant neighborhood we call home, dedicated to meeting the needs of its residents.
Grocery: Our mission is to provide organic, locally-sourced food sustainably, accessibly, and with a strong sense of community.
Cooperative: Unlike corporate chains, we are fully independent and community-owned. Our focus is on benefiting our members and the community, not investors.
A New Community-focused Cooperative Requires a New Website Experience!
As we transition over these next few months into our new, community-growth focused Brooklyn Grocery Cooperative, we will be migrating our online operations into a new, redesigned website which emphasizes easy-to-use accessibility, increased performance and functionality and new interactive features that we’re excited to share with everyone soon.
